Dairy cooperatives present their commitment to decarbonisation to the minister
Cooperativas agro- alimentarias de España within the framework of the IX Cooperative Congress, the country’s main dairy cooperatives presented to the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, their firm commitment to decarbonization and their active role in the fight against climate change, an urgent priority for Spanish and European society.
The cooperatives AIRA, CENTRAL LECHERA ASTURIANA, COVAP, KAIKU, COINGA, CLUN, AGROCANTABRIA and CADÍ, which represent one fifth of milk production and processing in Spain, have signed up to a historic commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the milk they produce or market by 30% by 2030.
Dairy cooperatives play a key role in the transition to a more sustainable and digitalized model. To this end, they have established an action plan with concrete measures:
- Align with these sustainability objectives, a decision already approved by their respective decision-making bodies.
- Implement systems for calculating the carbon footprint throughout the life cycle of the milk.
- Develop a plan with monitoring indicators and specific targets for 2030.
- Promote the creation of pilot farms, offering incentives to farmers who adopt sustainable practices early on.
- Promote capacity building on partner farms for the effective implementation of decarbonisation measures.
A sector united for a sustainable future
Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España supports the dissemination of this initiative among society, agents in the value chain and national and European administrations. The collaboration of all actors in the sector will be essential to consolidate a dairy model that is increasingly sustainable and committed to the future of the planet.
