Greenhouse gas emissions are an immediate concern for the planet. Like other sectors, the agri-food sector must make efforts to reduce those for which it is responsible. However, due to its socio-structural weaknesses, these efforts must be carefully planned and assessed for their cost/effectiveness and, above all, their adaptability without affecting its economic sustainability. The agri-food value chain and, as we will show, the dairy value chain, is establishing reduction commitments that will affect all its agents in the 2030 and 2050 scenarios. In this webinar we will have the opportunity to review the current and future strategies of European cooperation on decarbonisation in the dairy sector.
This webinar will be supported by COPA COGECA, the organisation representing farmers and agricultural cooperatives in the EU, which, together with DG Climate of the European Commission, will open the event. The central part will focus on the decarbonisation strategies of European dairy cooperatives, Finnish VALIO, Spanish CLAS, Irish CARBERY, French SODIAAL and Danish ARLA FOODS, moderated by ICOS. Any change will require progressiveness and know-how, such as that provided by the cooperatives, which are affected from two points of view, on the one hand in terms of how to help their farmers along this path, and on the other, as market players, competing for the ‘brand prestige’ that this element also incorporates and which can give access to or block certain marketing channels. Agri Zero NZ, a partnership between the New Zealand government and leading agri-food companies to accelerate the creation of tools to reduce emissions on farms, will also participate in this section.
In the research and technology section, the European Commission’s DG Agri will be participating and will present relevant aspects of the role that European projects are playing in the decarbonisation of the dairy sector. Two important projects in this regard will be presented, VISIONARY, explaining how they are working in particular on connecting farmers’ sustainability efforts with consumers and the REPAIR project, developing technology for methane capture in dairy barns.
The third section of this webinar will focus on offering the vision of industry and distribution in relation to their commitments on ESG criteria, the scope 3 approach. It will be completed with the intervention of the interprofessional MilkBE explaining how it is working to reduce emissions in 2030 through an agreement with the region of Flanders.
Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España will close this event by highlighting the most relevant conclusions that have emerged in the development of the different sections.
